sml : lrg
The exhibit title sml : lrg represents the concept that the essence of something small is equal to the essence of something large. It is the idea of a microcosm mirroring a macrocosm. When I was a child I asked my parents for both a microscope and a telescope. Those were my toys. I loved looking at tiny vast things. Much of my practice is rooted in observation of landscapes, patterns in nature, or objects around me. I am interested in the spaces between things, simplifying and painting over the unnecessary, and finding resonance in what is seen and unseen. My work is a meditation on memory, place, and the quiet spaces existing beneath the surface of everyday life. I am drawn to materials that carry their histories as that creates a place for me to begin. In my process, chance and intention are collaborators. I repurpose castaway materials, many of which are gifted to me by friends on the possibility I may use them someday. These include pieces cut from North Carolina weathered oak pallets or leftover brick ends made for a Greene and Greene home.
